Maintenance Recommendations
For most tops and covers a general maintenance routine will extend its life and help keep up the value of the investment you have in your boat.
All synthetic “canvas” type materials require regular cleaning and waterproofing. Acrylics such as Sunbrella are recommended to be cleaned with luke warm water and mild soap. Extremely dirty covers can take bleach as well. Do not use bleach on polyester type fabrics. Rinse well and air dry. (Machine washing is perfectly fine for smaller covers; make sure the stitching still has some integrity or get it re-stitched first). Once dry, a generous spray of waterproofing (silicone solution recommended for synthetic fabric. We suggest 303 brand High Tech Fabric Guard) should be given, following manufacturers instructions. For larger covers, spraying with fresh luke warm water and bucket washing with a soft brush will work while cover is on the boat, using the same mild soap. As above, rinse well, air dry and waterproof.
DO NOT DRY CLEAN OR MACHINE DRY ANY TOP OR COVER EVER
Snaps and zippers benefit from regular lubricating. We suggest “Captain Phab” Dry Teflon spray. It lubricates effectively but does not attract grit. Windows should be regularly cleaned with fresh water only then polished to remove water spots and protect from scratching using a plastic polishing product such as “Klear to Sea” and a very soft cloth to avoid marking. (We use old cotton T-shirts!)
At Lakeside we carry a full line of maintenance products including the ones mentioned above.
Be diligent about the upkeep of your covers to ensure they will last and remain effective for several years.
